Bounded delay packet scheduling in a bounded buffer

چکیده
We study the problem of buffer management in QoS-enabled network switches in the bounded delay model where each packet is associated with a weight and a deadline. We consider the more realistic situation where the network switch has a finite buffer size. A 9.82-competitive algorithm is known for the case of multiple buffers (Azar and Levy, SWAT’06). Recently, for the case of a single buffer, a 3-competitive deterministic algorithm and a 2.618-competitive randomized algorithm was known (Li, INFOCOM’09). In this paper we give a simple deterministic 2competitive algorithm for the case of a single buffer.

We consider algorithms to schedule packets with values and deadlines in a size-bounded buffer. At any time, the buffer can store at most B packets. Packets arrive over time. Each packet has a non-negative value and an integer deadline. In each time step, at most one packet can be sent. The objective is to maximize the total value gained by delivering packets no later than their respective deadl...

متن کاملRandomized competitive algorithms for online buffer management in the adaptive adversary model
In the problem of buffer management with bounded delay, packets with weights and deadlines arrive at a network switch over time, and the goal is to send those packets on the outgoing link while maximizing the total weight of the packets that are sent before their deadlines. We present a study of randomized algorithms that are competitive against an adaptive adversary. Previous studies considere...
متن کاملA ϕ-competitive algorithm for collecting items with increasing weights from a dynamic queue
The bounded-delay packet scheduling (or buffer management) problem is to schedule transmissions of packets arriving in a buffer of a network link. Each packet has a deadline and a weight associated with it. The objective is to maximize the weight of packets that are transmitted before their deadlines, assuming that only one packet can be transmitted in one time step. Online packet scheduling al...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Markov Modulated 1-Persistent CSMA/CA Protocol with Exponential Backoff Scheduling
This paper proposes a Markovian model of 1-persistent CSMA/CA protocols with K-Exponential Backoff scheduling algorithms. The input buffer of each access node is modeled as a Geo/G/1 queue, and the service time distribution of each individual head-of-line packet is derived from the Markov chain of the underlying scheduling algorithm. From the queuing model, we derive the characteristic equation...
